Planning photo shoot

The photo shoot will be about a famous DJ because it links with my magazines genre. I am going to plan a medium close up of young teenager aged 16-24 using some DJ equipment or wearing DJ equipment. The place will be a coloured background room, easy place to take a clear shot. I will get the model to pose very wild to show his mad clubbing attitude to the audience.

My second idea is to get a group of young teenagers banging their heads to loud music. The setting of the photo shoot will be in a room with big speakers. The young teenagers will pose all happy and wild while listening to the music. Another pose I would like the teenagers to do is standing in a group dressed in DJ equipment to show there band. I will get them to show a serious attitude when establishing the camera shot. I will use a long shot of all the band members/DJ group posing with their arms crossed looking towards the camera.

An example of a photo shot I want similar to mine is of the Swedish house mafia. I like how all the members have a laid back attitude towards the camera. I like the use of black and white to make it look more modern. The gear that the Swedish house mafia are using is what I want to use in my photo shoot, to make the teenagers look stylish and cool.

My music magazine is about bringing amazing gossip, news and reviews on the latest DJs in the clubs. The magazine will appeal to the audience subjected to such genres like electronic, dubstep, drum and bass and much more. The magazine is for young party animals around the world. This magazine has the atest gossip on all the new music, gigs and interviews with amazing DJs. The USP of my magazine is the use of colours, imagery and camera shots to make the magazine look eye dazzling.

flat plan and photo shoot ideas

This photo shoot idea would be a DJ with a medium close up shot of him playing with some dj decks. The decks will be small and compatible to use in the photo shoot. The Dj will be dressed up in DJ outfit or fashionable clothes.
This photo shoot idea is of a DJ standing to the left of the front cover, leaving room for all the cover headlines and features. The masthead will be small enough to fit at the side.
This is a flat plan of my DPS. I will use two pull quotes on each page and have one page image lead. I will use a stand first linked to the image, introducing the interview. The colours will be a huge variety to attract the younger audience.

The contents page has two sections to it. the first section has all the features and headliners on the left. Then there is pictures on the right tilted horizontly to make it look more stylish. At the bottom of the contents is a subscription box with an added picture. The colours will be eye catching and the fonts will also be in different sizes and colours.

The front cover is mainly image lead with a DJ on the front posistioned left. The cover will have a all the headlines at the left of the magazine easily spread, coloured and large font sizes. The target audience is for clubbers so the headlines will be about that topic. There will also be small text saying win prizes to catch attention to the readers.

moodboard

My moodboard is mainly inspired by the magazine Mix mags choice of layout. I like the colourful writing, large fonts and great photo shots of DJs. I have chosen mixmag layouts is becasue my magazine has the same target audience. I like the use of different variety of colours to make it stand out.

NME has amazing photo shoots that are clear and well positioned. The group shots of NME are amazingly organised. The photoshoots are more clearer than Mix Mag photoshoots.

Masthead designs

Masthead names and designs

I like the first Masthead becasue it is funky and stand outs withe the different colours. The name inspired me from vinyls on a record, which is suited to my target audience, clubbers. The second design is simple and more retro for the younger audience. I didnt add colours to make it more professional.

Wired up is associated with the DJ technology. The first design i have done uses colours that are more masculine, relevant to army colours. The second design has a techno theme to it however it is also simple and has no colours.

Decks name is linked to what DJs use in clubs/raves. The first design is eye appealing, with a techno style font. The second design is simple with different colours to make it look appealing to a younger audience.

Double page spread analysis

The DPS is laid out with a large picture of the band to the left and the main article of muse. There are many columns in the DPS all organised vertical. There is more text compared to pictures in the DPS. The photograph used is the band ‘Muse’ holding guitars, show that they are defiantly the genre rock. The outfit and expressions are to portray their band as serious and cool. The lead singer is positioned between the other band members to make him look the most important. The instrument also presents what they each play in the band. The style of the band members shows they want to be portrayed as professional.

The headline is about the main singer speaking to the audience. Many quotes are used to make it more interesting. The writer backs up the singer, giving positive comments about him. The language features used are rhetorical questions, quotes and descriptive writing about the main singer. The font style is very modern with black colour fill which is suited to this type of magazine. The article uses a pull quote stating “it can’t be a coincidence were a band of misfits”. This pull quote is from the lead singer Matt, giving his own opinion/quote to the readers about his band.

The stand first introduces the main singer into the interview, describing his actions. Words such as ‘murder’, ‘brutality’ and ‘death’ describes the lead singer as being tough and violent which may lead to how the band might want to be portrayed. I believe the artist/band would be happy with the writer’s comments/quotes. The writer indulges into a brief description of the main singer. The DPS is suited to more of an adult group because the pages are simple to read, plain font style and the vocabulary is bigger.

DPS Analysis

The DPS is laid out with large title and pictures on the left hand side and also on the right hand side. The page on the left is mainly text lead with picture of artists scattered across the page. The style of the font is very modern and the page use different font types to make it look fancier. The columns are placed around the large title, easy for the reader to navigate around the page. The columns have Body cap on each column. There is a stand first at the bottom introducing the main article.

The photographs used in the DPS are of all the music artists from 2010 cut out and spread on the page. There is no lead band or singer in the article because it is mainly focused on other artists. The headline is short and simple explaining to the audience the best fifty albums of 2010. The font style is very modern with vibrant colours mixed in.

The language used to describe the albums is positive in all the rankings. The description of the band is a positive tone, describing their personal achievements. The DPS has two articles, one that is for a band and the other is about albums. The style of the magazine goes with the pop look of the article story. The style of it is very modern with vibrant colours to show charm. I can tell the audience for this DPS is for teenagers because of the pop genre involved in the article. The use of pictures scattered keeps the reader interests and the pictures are of mainstream artists, listened today by today’s teenager/young adults. I like the Photoshop technique of cutting out celebrities scattering them round and fitting them in with the columns. I like how the columns are organised to fit well in the DPS covers.

Front Cover Analysis

This magazine is also suited to the younger audience. The music genre is all music however it is mainly main stream. The colours make it look more modern. The uses of the vibrant colours are to make it look pretty to the audience. The pictures are of all artists from different genres. The magazine is laid out with the pictures of different scattered over the top of the font. The Masthead is in the top Left corner visible in a newsagent. The main article is laid out large on the whole page, making it look like the most interesting story. The skyline is used to represent all the different artists listed at the front.

The pictures are of popular bands to reach to all music genres. The colours are very vibrant in the background because of its target audience. The black on white text is also used for a more modern look. The text at the bottom uses a rhetorical question to make them find out the answer. The font style is very modern with a 3D effect to make the cover stand out. The font is used regularly with NME magazine issues. The layout is different to the others, more pictures and fonts are speeded across the cover. It gives the reader a lot of options.

Double page spread analysis

The double page spread is laid out with the whole background spanning on two pages. It shows the luxurious scenery abroad. The Text is on top of the picture. There are three large columns all neatly in a row above a big space. The photograph used in this picture is of the band (Swedish house mafia) enjoying an expensive holiday, in rich clothes. The band is portrayed as rich/ higher class because of their style and background. The meaning of this photo is to show their lifestyle which is also linked with their article. The women are also placed in the photo to show how much of ladies men the band is in life. The DPS also has black on white text.

The style of writing is a positive tone about their lifestyle in the amazing Ibiza. There are quotes used in the article to explain how good it is in Ibiza and feedback to fans. It is an interview with the band, so it uses quotes as a feedback to readers. The article starts of describing the amazing scenery that the band is living in. Then the writer describes their background and achievement’s. The quotes are in tone of hysterical use from the band. The headline font style is very modern and very bold.

I think the band would be happy on how they are perceived in the DPS. The photo shows their wealth, the descriptive writing is positive and the headline stands out from the rest of the fonts. The target audience for this DPS is for young adults that like clubbing or dancing. It is also for readers that enjoy the music of the Swedish house mafia. It can be an interest for learning about their background and lifestyle of this famous band.

The Photoshop skills used in this DPS is the layers of font and images with added effects. I like the use of modern style font and the organisation of the columns.

Masthead Analysis

The kerrang masthead is suited to a heavy metal genre. The Large font is has cracks through it to make it look violent. The blood stain at the bottom also portrays these magazines as mad. The black plain font is more suitable compared to a font pink and colourful. The masthead is very mad or forceful to the reader. It stands out very good with a mad vibe to it. The masthead shows it is more suitable to metal rock fans for adults or teens.

Classic FM magazine is more suited to a more mature audience. The font style is simple and modern compared to the kerrangs violent look. The writing style also looks suited to upper class audience because the design of the red ‘F’ looks very fancy. The title doesn’t have much design to it and fewer colours. The kerrang has a more violent vibe to the masthead however classic FM masthead design looks more calming.

How women are represented in 50 cent ‘Candy shop’ video

In this video the women are presented as much more obedient to men. The song is trying to show women as candy and the men picking which sweet they want. The women are dressed up in short clothes to seduce the men and please them. There are many sexual innuendoes in this video such as      ‘I’ll let you lick my lollipop’. The women are mainly there to please the men in this candy shop. The women are all physically attracted, which is what the men want and get.

The men show they are rich and famous to get all these hot girls to attract them. Many women would be against the video because of how the men portray women more like candy than a person. The lyrics are also very dirty, using many sexual innuendos which are more targeted to an older audience.  This whole video is for the viewpoint of men, their dream place; nothing is viewed of what women want.  At one point the women are dressed in red, which is a colour of seduction or danger. The women are also dressed in other colours to represent other candy selection. The women are the main purpose in the video, tending to all the men’s needs.

The whole video is suited to the rapping industry; it is what all the men want in all the videos. It also shows that because they are rich it means they can get all these physically attracted women to seduce them. This song is based on all men’s ideas. The audience is suited for all men and not for women. The ending of the video rightly shows it is a man’s dream to have women acting seductive. The main meaning of this video is that men are picking any candy they want which is represented as women.

Contents Page Analysis

This contents page is set out as a newspaper style. The masthead 'Inside this week' is used commonly in newspapers. The contents uses a mix of modern and old elements. The main image is laid out in the middle, with surrounding images of other features. The contents uses pull quotes underneath images, to attract readers to those sections. An advertisement is used in the bottom right corner.

This contents use bold, old style font for the numbers, to make it look similar to a newspaper contents. The columns of text are scattered around the page with only the features left small in a box. I like the use of the black and white backgrounds to make the colour in the pictures stand out. The wide range of pictures of different artists shows it is suited for all audiences.

Contents Page Analysis

The Masthead is simple with white on black text effect. The main article is on the left which is the most largest photo. This makes it easier for the reader if the main article is bigger. The columns are in white bold writing, organised neatly down the side, listed in numbers highlighted yellow. The contents is laid out similar to the Q magazine, however the articles are surrounded the article at the left and bottom.

I like the use of colours to highlight the main articles in the contents. It is easier for the reader to navigate around the page. The features are in one sorted column and the rest are at the bottom to be seen as less important. The layout also appears very modern.

Contents Page Analysis

The main article/ lead image is the most important and is put largely beside the other stories. The masthead is using the same colours of Q, vibrant red with black font writing. The page numbers are put clearly beside the articles for easy navigation on the page. The Pictures are laid out on top of each other like photos which give it a very modern style. The columns are clear to read down the sides, with the headings in bold.

The Picture has the main singer dressed up smart with glasses representing the Q magazine. The contents is easy and simple to read. The double page spread is at the bottom to show the reader a preview. This contents uses a simple layout for easy navigation of the magazine.

Magazine Front Cover Analysis

This magazine is Mix Mag is more suited to a different audience and genre of music. The use of pink, black and white make the magazine look more stylish. The Masthead is very bold to make it stand out to the audience. The skyline persuades buyers to read it because of it being the greatest dance and music magazine. The music genre dance is more suited to a younger audience that like to club. The main article is Largely bold stating the main headline. The text aslo use black on white effect.

The layout of this magazine is very complicated compared to the Q magazine. It is  funky, attractive and much more stylish because of the vibrant colours. The lead image is behind all the text to show the whole of the band. The bottom middle is to give the magazine more space for the text. The colours also represent the Mix mag masthead. The columns are spread around the magazine cover to make it easier to read. The colours are also used in the text for a more cool appearance, suited to the younger audience. .

The three guys in the background are suited to the genre of music. The smart clothes and luxury background makes the magazine look more sophisticated. The men also show they are very wealthy because of their choice of their style in clothes. These men do appeal to a younger audience. The three men are portrayed as cool due to the drink and large cigar.

Cover analysis

The magazine Q features are similar to many magazines. The Logo is  set to the left for view and it is large font with it smashed by the guitar, which shows its rock themed. The Image of the singer is large and stands out in front of the audience. The singer expressions and body language is very rough which is mainly suited to the rock genre. The singer has a cool attitude because of using the uitar to smash up the logo. This shows it is for mainly 16 - 30 year old's. The singer is portrayed as very rough and out of control which also links with the lead article. The guitar definitely shows the audience that the issue is mainly about rock.

The layout is very simple on this front cover. The singer is next to the bold main article. The skyline text tells the readers how amazing the magazine is in shops and it also uses the white on black effect. The magazine uses less text on the cover which gives it more space for the large image. The masthead/logo is placed big, bold with a a bright red colour to stand out in front of the reader. The Q logo is smashed to give the singer a rough/tough portrayal.

The colours are very dull with not much lighting included. The red on the masthead is to make it stand out for readers to remember its reason. The clothing is also black and red colours to represent this music magazine. The cover lines are different colours to make it look more vibrant. The cover is very simple compared to other magazine. This magazine gives the impression of an audience for an older age group however it looks suitable for all age groups.

Magazine Contents Page

My Final Contents Page Design

Skills Development Journal - Contents

Finally I add the features and Exclusives. I added the features in the red area with black font and the Exclusives in the black area which allows the reader to see all the good stories on the cover. I had also added the V - Festival logo to present the guide included. I have used the modern text also for the contents.

Skills Development Journal - Contents

Secondly I started adding in the imagery. I used the Foo Fighters emblem to make thnd thee article stand out. I then placed a pattern behind the logo to make it stand out more on the contents. I used a picture of daft punk to make it look more musical and it is relevant to the posters of the artists. I used the Foo Fighter colours on the background.

Skills Development Journal - Contents

Firstly I placed the heading (contents) at the top with the  font style Modern 2.0 from Photoshop. Then I used the similar gradient tool to the front cover, however used the colours from the Foo Fighters logo. I used the split in the middle to separate the features and the exclusive's. I added in the white stripes by using the paint bucket to fill.

Magazine Front Cover

My Final college magazine design

Skills Development Journal

Then I added the article headings randomly scattered on the front cover. I placed the main article “student rock singer” near the photo to show it is about this particular student. I used the same modern font and made it a larger bold font. I used black square boxes to be able to put white writing on top. I made these boxes using the design tool. I used a wide mix of music genre topics on the sub- headings to make it suited to all students. Adding free posters and festival guide was used to get more people to buy the magazine. I made the prizes articles show up in a box, including white font.

Finally after adding in the articles, I added the final features needed in the cover. I firstly added a bar code which I gained from the internet and added a price underneath. I then added a small logo which represents the v - festival guide. I had also added effects to the fonts and the logo.

Skills Development Journal

Firstly to start off my cover of my magazine I added my mast head which I gained from Photoshop.  I wanted my magazine to look modern and new so I used font style modern 2.0 to give me that look. I had added a mic as an exclamation mark to show it has the music theme. I used shorts words and exclamation marks in the sub title/heading to make it look exciting however make it brief. I have also used the same font as the heading.

Then I added in my background after adding effects to my masthead. I used light red colour to make it look simple and modern. I used effects such as shadow and glow to make it look more professional. I had then imported the medium close of the students. The shouting from the girl implies she is from a rock band which is suited with my music genre. I had made the picture big to make it the main story of the magazine. I used effects such as inner/outer glow to make it look better.

College Magazine research

The magazine uses a small and simple title with a bright colour to make it stand out however make the reader understand what the magazine is all about. The model used in the cover makes the magazine look modern and stylish because of how the model is dressed. The books in his hands also suggests it is all about college news. The subtitles and information is subjected at the sides of the model instead of covering the student in all the writing. The use of white and green colours on the font to make the subtitles stand out from the less important information. The use of a young model, vibrant colours and information related college will definitely appeal to all students at college.

Magazine Research

This Magazine appealed to me because the use of amazing vibrant colours and wacky fonts suggested it for a teenager audience. I like how all the headlines are laid out randomly across the front cover. The use of loads of vibrant colours make it look modern and also suited to most music genres. The use of white writing on black makes the headline stand out more. The two shot of the young band members shows it is mainly suited for teenagers.

Magazine Research

I like the use of bright pink and blue to help make the headlines stand out on the front cover. The font used in this magazine is very modern. The font different colours and sizes appeal to me because it looks modern, simple and makes the magazine look more interesting. The use of large bold writing around the photo of Kanye West, is to make the headlines look interesting to the audience. The audience recommended would probably be set for teenagers/young adults. Another great feature is the close up makes Kanye West the centre of attention for all the readers.

My Moodboard

I have mainly gathered all my images which are linked to technology or music. The image contains retro games, music artists and music equipment. The music artists Daft punk and Deadmau5 are my favourite DJs in my moodboard. Pac man and space invaders were my two favourite retro games at the time. My favourite music genre is dance, electronic and rock hence why I have included the music artists and DJ deck.

CD cover research

My Design Brief

James Dooley

Design Brief:

Band name: Electric Pulse

Target Audience demographic:

My age range will be between ages 20 to 30 and above. The music genre from this band will be electronic/dance music for teenagers and adults. The different music they listen to is dub step and metal rock. The style of clothing will be casual or indie rock in the band. The electronic pulse fans will be interested in high technical gear, DJ decks and the speakers.

Imagery and colour schemes:

The imagery will be bright vibrant colours that represent electric. The cover must have pictures a lightning bolt to give the impression of an electric pulse. I would like to use a big range of colours to make the design stand out. Images of manga style cartoons will imply it is suitable for teenagers or young adults.

Type face and Font styles:

The font style will be in a pattern of music wave or an electric bolt design to give it the look of electric type genre. The font must be colourful to attract the young teenager audience. The type face will be suited to the electronic/rock genre. Preferably the type face will be of thunder bolt and music equipment such as DJ decks, amplifiers, speakers etc.

What type of faces will be appropriate and which ones will be off the mark?

The faces that will be appropriate are colourful background suited for the teenager audience, instead of dull colours. It will be appropriate to use manga style cartoons however it would be inappropriate to use skulls, blood and gore because of the selected genre and audience. The face must include instruments that refer to the electronic genre. Range of vibrant colours will be an appropriate face for the cd cover, however dull and dark colours wouldn’t suit the genre of electric.
This is my CD back cover first design. I have used the same glow effect as the first front cover and the same cover. I have used my own image of the city as my scenery and added effects such as filter, vibrant glow and invert. I have added a speaker and a lighning bolt to show the genre of electronic music. The name of the songs are relevant to electronic terms. Simple writing is used to stand out from the dark backround.

CD front cover

This is my first design of my front cover. I used the black and white colours to make it look creepy. The electric bolt is relevant to my genre electronic/techno music. I used plain font that stands out on the front cover. I have used the glow effect to make the trees stand out from the rest of the picture. I like the use of the lightning bolt to make the cover look ominous. I have used my own imagery to create the scenery.
